Headteacher’s Welcome

We are delighted you have chosen our nursery school and look forward to welcoming your family.

Our nursery school is based on two different sites: York Road in Guildford opposite Waitrose, and Hazel Avenue on Bellfields, just a short distance from the centre of Guildford.

Our nursery school is a maintained (state-funded) school, which means that qualified teachers lead our children’s learning. 

We are a fully inclusive nursery school and welcome all children and families, working together to help each child become confident, independent and ready for the next stage in their education.

We use the principles of Friedrich Froebel to guide our work.

Froebel wanted to “Educate people to be free, to think, to take action for themselves.”  We would love children everywhere to be educated so they too can have the freedom to make choices, think creatively and critically, and make their dreams a reality. Froebel knew that you are never too young or too old to start.

At Guildford Nursery School, this means:

• Children can spend as much time as they like outside.
• We offer experiences such as gardening, cooking, woodwork, sewing, climbing trees, using clay and lighting a fire.
• Children are given the freedom to make choices with adults present to guide them when necessary.
• We accept each child exactly as they are and build on their strengths, providing the right support at the right time.
• The resources that help children to really think and use their imagination are often reusable and recycled, and are always beautifully presented.
• Children are given plenty of time and space to play and communicate.
• Staff look for the good intentions behind every child’s actions.
• Adults observe each child carefully so they can respond to their interests. They teach the skills and knowledge that the children need.
• Relationships between staff and children are always warm and respectful; together they share in the joy and delight that is discovery and learning.

We offer all eligible children their funded hours of nursery school entitlement free of charge. We do not charge top-up fees.
