Developing SEN practice in EYFS


Target audience: EYFS and Key Stage 1 Practitioners

Trainers: Helen Moyes

Helen has worked as a class teacher for over 11 years with 5 of those years being dedicated to the early years. She completed her SENCO qualification and has dedicated this role for children between the ages of 2 -6 years. Helen is the current Inclusion Lead at Guildford Nursery School, where 20% of the cohort has SEND. Last year across the organization, this also included 18 children with an EHCP.

Brief course content

  • Understand how to support EYFS children with special educational needs within their learning environment.
  • Explore specific needs of children and suggest practical strategies to enable children’s individual needs to be met.
  • A tour of the learning environment of Guildford Nursery to understand how the layout, organization of resources and the daily routine all work together to support a high number of children with special educational needs.

Expected outcomes

  • Understand practical strategies for supporting children with a variety of special educational needs.
  • Participants can discuss their own learning environment and any unique potential challenges which they may be facing.
  • Experience first-hand how another setting has adapted their provision to suit children with diverse special educational needs.
